John Bisland and family papers, 1762-1884 (bulk 1800-1859).

Collection contains the business and personal papers of the John Bisland family and Samuel Hopkins Lambdin of Natchez, Miss. Business records consist primarily of accounts, receipts, contracts and memoranda. They reflect his activities as a cotton planter and slaveholder in Mississippi. Early records (1774-1775) include accounts of John Bisland's business transactions in Scotland and North Carolina. His activities as a cotton planter in Mississippi are documented by records related to the sale and purchases of slaves and land, cotton purchases and shipments, an account of a trip to Scotland with a shipment of cotton (1803-1804), and a plantation diary (1814-1818). Personal correspondence comprises the greater part of the personal papers and was written from the various family plantation homes. Correspondence concerns the education of the Bisland children and the immigration of friends and relatives to United States. Manuscript volumes include plantation diary (1814-1815), estate book (1790-1800), receipt book (1812-1820), letter book (1817), memoranda books (1770-1803), journal (1767-1773), and ledger (1774-1811). Papers of Samuel H. Lambdin, husband of Jane McClary Bisland, begin with the mid-1840s. His letters to John Rucker Bisland, of Richland Plantation, discuss family matters, and business and legal affairs. Other papers relate mostly to the cotton trade, also include a contract for the sale of Fairfax Plantation, St. Mary Parish, La. (1857).
